Ionic Sculpture Gallery remodeling

American Friends of the Prado Museum, thanks to the sponsorship of The Engh Foundation, is proud to help fund the remodeling of the north Ionic Gallery of the Villanueva building, recently opened to the public to help increase the visibility of sculpture and decorative arts in the permanent collection.

An elegantly windowed corridor facing the Paseo del Prado, the gallery evokes the style of important historical collections some of which helped reunite these works during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.

The resulting display includes 56 outstanding works spanning from Ancient Egypt and the Roman world to the Renaissance and Baroque which were collected by figures such as Queen Christina of Sweden, Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, Marqués del Carpio and José Nicolás de Azara eventually forming part of the Spanish Royal Collection where they decorated Palaces and Royal Sites before incorporating into the Prado Museum's collection.
